Mollie O’Callaghan triumphs over Ariarne Titmus in a thrilling Olympic clash.

Last month, during Australia’s Olympic swim trials in Brisbane, former 200m freestyle world champion Mollie O’Callaghan broke her own world record. However, her teammate and rival Ariarne Titmus swam even faster. At just 20 years old, O’Callaghan held her composure during the post-race interview but couldn’t hold back the tears once the cameras were off.

On Monday evening in Paris, there were more tears, but this time they were tears of joy and relief. O’Callaghan may have lost the battle last month, but she won the war at the packed La Défense Arena. In one of the most anticipated races of the meet, she got her revenge by winning her first individual Olympic gold in a thrilling four-lap showdown with Titmus. This marks the first time in 20 years that Australian swimmers have secured both the gold and silver at the Olympics, following in the footsteps of Ian Thorpe and Grant Hackett.
