Amazon is solidifying its position as Australia’s largest online store, according to a leading expert, who warns that other major retailers should be concerned with 7.9 million Australians shopping on the platform. Data from Roy Morgan indicates that Amazon’s customer base grew by 16 percent in the 12 months leading up to June 2024, adding 1.1 million new users compared to the previous year. Brian Walker, CEO of Retail Doctor Group, believes the US-based e-commerce giant is on track to join Kmart and Big W as one of Australia’s biggest variety retailers. “Amazon could be among Australia’s largest general merchandise retailers within the next five years,” Walker said, noting that some retailers, like the recently collapsed Booktopia, are already feeling the pressure. “If you don’t have a competitive offer that leverages speed, range, price, or convenience, you’re in their crosshairs.”
