NDIS employment supports assist Ian in preparing for and finding work.

Palmerston NDIS participant Ian Fraser credited the employment support in his plan for helping him secure paid work at Bunnings.

In his last few years of school, the now 20-year-old engaged Northern Territory service provider YouthWorX NT to build his life and employment skills. “When I left school, I didn’t know what job I wanted to do,” Ian said. “I have autism, so I just knew I was a hands-on type of guy who liked helping people.”

Ian struggled to engage with people, which affected his confidence. “It’s always been difficult for me to talk to people. I know what I want to say, but I just can’t get the words out. It was easier to avoid conversations,” he shared.

Receiving occupational and speech therapies through his NDIS plan, Ian’s youth development coach, Keidan Holt, noticed significant improvement. “Ian has certainly come out of his shell. Every time I see him, he’s improving. It shows in how he presents himself socially and at work. I’m really proud of him,” Keidan said.

Keidan set up regular one-on-one employment coaching sessions with Ian. “We talked about what he wanted to do, set some goals, and created steps for Ian to reach those goals,” Keidan explained.

Ian completed several courses, including a First Aid Certificate, a Construction White Card, and a Certificate I in Developing Independence. He also gained work experience to explore his interests, including stints at a cabinet-making shop, Coles, a garden center, and volunteering at PAWS, Foodbank, festivals, and a Crocodile Park.

An organized industry tour of Bunnings piqued Ian’s interest in working there. “Keidan took a few of us to Bunnings, where a team member showed us around the store, explaining how it operated and their health and safety rules. I thought it looked like a really good place to work,” Ian said.

With Ian’s interest in Bunnings clear, Keidan helped him create a profile and submit his resume when a job opportunity arose. Ian was soon called for an interview. “Keidan helped me prepare with mock interviews. When the interview came, I must have done well because I got a call saying I got the job. I couldn’t believe it, but here I am,” Ian said.
