Kamala Harris has secured enough Democratic delegate votes to become the party’s presidential nominee.

The second day of the Garma Festival is underway in north-east Arnhem Land, with the Prime Minister announcing a $20 million investment in the creation of a Garma institute. Additionally, Northern Territory Police Commissioner Michael Murphy has issued an unequivocal apology to all First Nations Territorians for injustices and racism over the 154 years the force has operated.

Commissioner Murphy committed to ensuring that NT police will not repeat the mistakes of the past.

During a ceremony featuring traditional dance by Wadeye community members and NT Police representatives painted with white ochre, the commissioner outlined the next steps.

A separate apology will be given to the remote community of Yuendumu, where Warlpiri man Kumunjayi Walker was shot dead in 2019. The death led to a murder inquiry and a coronial inquest, which revealed detailed evidence of racist attitudes among some police officers.
