The collapse of Rex Airlines: The challenges of a third carrier’s survival in Australia

An aviation expert claims the Australian market is “simply too small” to support a third carrier, following the collapse of regional airline Rex.

Despite attempts to compete with Qantas and Virgin Australia and enter metropolitan markets, Regional Express went into voluntary administration on Tuesday evening.

Although flights to and from regional cities will continue, Boeing 737 jets operating between Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane have immediately ceased operations.
