A Botswanan mine has produced a 2,492-carat diamond, which is reported to be the second largest ever discovered.

One of the world’s largest diamonds has been discovered in Botswana. The 2,492-carat gem, unearthed this week by Canadian company Lucara Diamond Corp, is believed to be the largest found in a century and the second-largest ever mined.

Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi displayed the diamond in his office, confirming it as the largest ever discovered in the country. Lucara’s CEO, William Lamb, expressed excitement over the find from the Karowe Diamond Mine, which has been notable for significant diamond discoveries since its opening in 2012.

Lamb highlighted that this discovery demonstrates the exceptional potential of Karowe Mine and underscores the effectiveness of their strategic investment in advanced X-ray technology. He emphasized that the find solidifies Karowe’s status as a world-class diamond mine and reflects the success of their operational and underground development strategies. The company attributed the identification, retrieval, and preservation of this mega diamond to X-ray technology installed in 2017.
