Qantas has pledged to refund or rebook flights for hundreds of customers after the airline mistakenly sold first-class tickets at significantly reduced prices. On 22 August, some first-class fares for flights between Australia and the US were listed online at up to 85% off the usual price, with return tickets available for less than $5,000—around $15,000 cheaper than usual. These fares were also about 65% cheaper than the business class options. Approximately 300 customers booked flights during the eight hours these mistakenly reduced fares were available.
A Qantas spokesperson explained that the error was due to a coding mistake, stating, “This was a case where the fare was actually too good to be true.” As a goodwill gesture, Qantas is rebooking affected customers in business class at no extra cost, or offering a full refund if preferred.
