Deforestation occurs on farms that many people are unaware of.

Among all industries, beef production is responsible for more forest destruction than any other. Forests worldwide are cleared to create pasture for cattle destined for our plates, and Australia is no exception. Over half of the continent is used for grazing livestock, with most deforestation occurring on Australian cattle farms.

There is now a global effort to halt deforestation through regulations, consumer action, and corporate accountability. Supermarkets are being pressured to stop selling beef from farms that clear forests. In response, the beef industry is challenging this by redefining what constitutes deforestation.

The Australian Conservation Foundation, which is advocating for changes in supermarket policies in Australia, has investigated numerous instances of deforestation. They have compiled a list of 50 properties that have cleared significant forest areas in recent years. All these properties meet two key criteria: they contain habitats of protected species or ecological communities, and they are linked to the domestic beef industry. This list highlights the impact of deforestation caused by beef production across the country.
