Trump says Putin has “completely lost it” following major Russian assault on Ukraine.

President Donald Trump on Sunday sharply criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying he has “gone absolutely CRAZY” following Moscow’s most extensive aerial assault since the war in Ukraine began three years ago.

“I’ve always had a very good relationship with Vladimir Putin of Russia, but something has happened to him. He has gone absolutely CRAZY!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “He is needlessly killing a lot of people, and I’m not just talking about soldiers. Missiles and drones are being shot into cities in Ukraine, for no reason whatsoever.”

Speaking to reporters earlier, Trump said, “I’m not happy with what Putin is doing. He’s killing a lot of people, and I don’t know what the hell happened to Putin.”

In his Truth Social post, Trump also took aim at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who had earlier accused the U.S. of enabling Russian aggression through its “silence.”

“Likewise, President Zelenskyy is doing his country no favors by talking the way he does,” Trump wrote. “Everything out of his mouth causes problems. I don’t like it, and it better stop.”

At least 12 people, including children, were killed and dozens more injured in a wave of Russian aerial attacks across Ukraine, officials confirmed Sunday. The strikes mark an escalation in Moscow’s bombardment campaign, coming as global calls intensify for Russian President Vladimir Putin to accept a ceasefire deal.

“The world may go on vacation, but the war continues, despite weekends and weekdays. This cannot be ignored. America’s silence, and the silence of others in the world, only encourages Putin,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a Sunday morning address.

In response, former President Donald Trump, speaking to reporters Sunday evening, said he is “absolutely” considering additional sanctions on Russia—something Zelensky has repeatedly urged. While Trump previously expressed reluctance to pursue new sanctions, suggesting there was “a chance” for diplomatic progress, he acknowledged the situation may now warrant a change.

“I was very surprised by the aerial assault,” Trump said. “Just a week ago, they launched the largest drone attack yet—and then, while I’m in the middle of talking to Putin, rockets are raining down on Kyiv and other cities.”

Trump has long emphasized his rapport with Putin but revealed that their most recent phone call, just days earlier, came amid the Russian onslaught. “We’re in the middle of talking, and he’s shooting rockets into Kyiv,” Trump told reporters in New Jersey before departing for Washington.

Despite the violence, Trump announced that following his calls with Putin, Zelensky, and European allies, both sides have agreed to begin negotiations.

“Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a Ceasefire and, more importantly, an END to the War,” Trump said, adding that “conditions will be negotiated between the two parties—as it should be—because only they truly understand the complexities on the ground.”
