Elon Musk has publicly criticized President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill

WASHINGTON — Billionaire Elon Musk expressed his “disappointment” over the hefty price tag of Donald Trump’s highly publicized tax legislation recently passed by the House.

On May 22, lawmakers narrowly approved the sweeping package in a 215-214 vote. The bill seeks to extend the 2017 Trump-era tax cuts, ramp up spending on defense and border security, and impose new restrictions on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), among other provisions. Trump has branded the legislation his “big, beautiful bill.”

But in an exclusive interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Musk voiced frustration over the bill’s financial impact, saying, “I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing.”

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office projects the legislation would add $3.8 trillion to the national debt over the next decade.

“I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful,” Musk added. “But I don’t know if it can be both. Just my personal opinion.”

Musk, who was appointed by Trump to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), had previously spearheaded aggressive efforts to rein in government spending and reduce the size of the federal workforce. However, he has since stepped back from the role, taking a less active stance in recent months.

The bill now moves to the Senate, where lawmakers are expected to propose revisions before it can advance further.
