The Rise and Fracture of Stefon Diggs’ Buffalo Tenure
In 2020, Stefon Diggs dominated the NFL, leading all receivers with 127 catches and 1,535 receiving yards. His production and presence were unmatched. Over the next four seasons, he made four consecutive Pro Bowls and became a cornerstone of the Buffalo Bills’ offense. For a time, there was a legitimate argument that Diggs was the best receiver in football. He was devastating. Absolutely devastating.
But then, gradually—almost imperceptibly—things began to shift. Or perhaps more accurately, things began to reveal themselves.
Diggs remained well-liked in the locker room and was known for his tireless work ethic. Yet, subtle cracks began to emerge in his relationship with the team. One notable moment came when he and quarterback Josh Allen exchanged heated words on the sideline, a flashpoint that hinted at deeper tensions beneath the surface.
One thing is certain: if you remember what Stefon Diggs did in 2020, what you’re seeing now is stunning. He had some solid seasons in Buffalo after that breakout year, but then he was traded to Houston—where he unfortunately tore his ACL. Now, Diggs is with the New England Patriots.
Recently, Patriots coach Mike Vrabel addressed a video circulating on social media involving Diggs.
“Obviously, we want to make great decisions on and off the field,” Vrabel said. “We’re hoping that when we’re on the field and in call periods, we’re making great decisions. The message is the same for all players — we want everyone to be all in. Any conversations I’ve had with Stefon will remain between him, me, and the club.”
Patriots radio commentator Scott Zolak weighed in on the situation, suggesting that cutting Diggs isn’t off the table.
“I came into the show knowing it’s on the table,” Zolak said on 98.5 The Sports Hub’s “Zolak & Bertrand.” “There’s more than just the boat video — some other things I’ve heard raise questions. Are you really all in?
“The videos of him working out look great, and I think he’s a valuable player. I don’t think he should be cut because he could help Drake Maye, the offense, and Josh McDaniels by providing a true threat who can set coverage. Right now, the Patriots lack that.”
This puts Vrabel in a difficult position. He’s trying to build a culture where everyone is fully committed, but the team also desperately needs Diggs’ talent.
So, back to the original question: Do you remember when Stefon Diggs was one of the best wide receivers in the NFL?
It’s hard to predict where he goes from here. Maybe he can return to his 2020 form—though 2022 wasn’t bad either. Last season in Houston, he showed flashes of the old Diggs, finishing with 496 yards in eight games.
Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said Diggs was at the team’s OTAs on Monday, which is a good sign after he missed last week.
Something just seems off with Diggs right now. But that doesn’t mean it will stay that way. There’s likely still something left in him—his recent success in Buffalo wasn’t that long ago.
