California Governor Criticizes Trump’s National Guard Deployment, Calls It ‘Dictatorial’

Newsom Blasts Trump’s National Guard Deployment as ‘Acts of a Dictator’ Amid LA Protests

California Governor Gavin Newsom has sharply criticized former President Donald Trump’s decision to deploy National Guard troops in response to violent protests in Los Angeles, calling the move “the acts of a dictator.”

In a video posted on social media, Newsom highlighted Trump’s remarks threatening to federally prosecute state and local officials who interfere with immigration enforcement—an issue that sparked protests across Los Angeles on June 6, 7, and 8.

Newsom accused Trump of “inciting and provoking violence,” “creating mass chaos,” and “militarizing cities.”

Tensions between the two leaders are longstanding. On June 7, Trump posted on social media, blasting Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Newsom—whom he mockingly referred to with a nickname—for failing to contain the unrest.

Their feud most recently flared in late May, when Trump threatened to withhold federal funding from California after a transgender high school athlete qualified for the state championships—prompting Trump to reiterate his stance on banning transgender athletes from women’s sports, via an executive order issued February 5.

Newsom, widely considered a potential Democratic presidential contender, has frequently clashed with Trump on issues ranging from wildfire management and environmental policy to immigration and trade. Despite being critical of Trump, Newsom has also voiced concerns with his own party on occasion.

As Trump’s former immigration advisor Tom Homan and other federal officials doubled down on threats to prosecute interference in immigration operations, Newsom responded defiantly, daring federal authorities to arrest him for opposing their intervention.
