The flight fell into an air pocket while the cabin crew was serving breakfast, Suvarnabhumi Airport general manager Kittipong Kittikachorn told a press conference. Experiencing what has been classed as “severe turbulence,” the aircraft went into a steep drop over the Andaman Sea, near Myanmar. Tracking data from FlightRadar24, analysed by The Associated Press, shows the flight cruising at an altitude of 37,000 feet (11,300 metres) — within the average range for commercial flights. The Boeing 777-300ER then suddenly descended to 31,000 feet (9,400m) in about three minutes, a drop of approximately 6,000 feet (1,800m). The aircraft maintained this altitude for less than 10 minutes before landing in Bangkok less than a half-hour later. Tracking service FlightRadar24 informed Reuters that there were storms — some severe — in the area at the time.
